About

Geography is alive. This is where its stories get told.

Founded 2025By Louis Barbat

WhatTheGeo began in 2025 as a passion project by geography enthusiast Louis Barbat. It started as a YouTube channel of animated videos about interesting geography facts, and it has since grown into a community of curious explorers.

The idea came from a simple frustration: geography is too often taught as a list of capitals, flags, and borders to memorize and forget. That version of the subject misses what makes the planet worth paying attention to. Coastlines shift. Cities rise where rivers meet. Languages, climates, and trade routes leave traces you can still see on a map. WhatTheGeo exists to tell those stories, and to treat geography as something alive rather than a quiz.

The idea

Coastlines shift. Cities rise where rivers meet. Geography is something alive, not a quiz.

The channel focuses on short, animated explainers that connect a place to the forces that shaped it: physical processes, human decisions, and the odd historical accidents that still show up on the ground. The aim is not to replace a textbook. It is to make the subject feel like something you would actually want to keep learning about after class ends.

What started as one person making videos has become a small community of people who like maps, odd facts, and the question of why a place looks the way it does. If that sounds like you, you are in the right place.
